Little River Pollution

Pollution flume entering Little RiverThe Lookout Mountain Heritage Alliance has been monitoring the water quality of the West Fork of Little River since February 2006. The National Park service began testing 11 locations throughout the entire Little River watershed in November 2006. These independent efforts have detected excessive levels of pollutants.

Fecal Coli and E-Coli have been detected at levels many times safe for swimming and fishing. Arsenic has been detected at the maximum limit safe for swimming and fishing. Other pollutants have been detected within safe guidelines, but their increasing presence is matter for concern.

Early investigations point toward poor storm water management plans as the largest source of these toxins.
